Steps to a Successful Senior Session

WHAT TO WEAR

  • Bring Variety: Depending on your session, at least 3 outfits is a good start. Think about choosing outfits that fit the following ... casual, dressy, sports/hobby related, fashion, and passion.
  • Classic & Timeless: Choose at least one outfit that won’t look dated in a few years.
  • Show Your Personality: Wear casual, trendy, or formal attire that feels you.
  • Layer Up & Accessorize: Jackets, scarves, hats, and jewelry add visual interest.
  • Comfort Matters: Ensure clothes fit well and allow you to move naturally. Not too tight & not too loose.
  • Try It On: Try on all outfits beforehand to ensure they fit and look great!
  • Undergarments Matter: Choose appropriate, neutral-colored undergarments (for each outfit).
  • Avoid Distractions: Try to steer clear of small, busy prints or neon colors. Solid, neutral colors tend to photograph best and don't distract from the star of the show - YOU!
  • Stay Wrinkle-Free: Steam or iron clothes before your session! Wrinkles cannot be "photoshopped".
  • Shoes: Don't forget the shoes to match the outfits. Believe it or not, this is one of the top 3 things that are left behind.

Hair & Makeup

  • Stick to What You Know: Your senior session is not the time to experiment with a brand-new look. Stick with a hairstyle and makeup style that you feel confident in.
  • Avoid Last-Minute Changes: A new haircut, drastic hair color change, or untested makeup can lead to stress if it doesn’t turn out as expected.
  • Consider a Professional: If you want a polished look, hiring a professional hair and makeup artist can be a great option. While I don’t have a specific artist I use in-house, I can always recommend one if needed.
  • Makeup Matters: Even minimal foundation, mascara, and lip color can enhance your features.
  • Be Prepared for Touch-Ups: Bring a brush, comb, and any styling tools you may need, along with hairspray or other products to keep your look fresh. Also, pack essential makeup items like powder and lip color for quick touch-ups during the session.
  • Nail Care Matters: Keep nails clean and well-groomed, whether polished or natural.

QUICK NOTE ON TANNING

We all love a good tan, but there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure you look your best on camera. A natural, healthy glow is great, but over-tanning—whether from the sun or a spray—can lead to unnatural tones or uneven patches. Sunburns, peeling skin, or an orange tint from a spray tan can be difficult to correct in photos. If you plan to tan, do so gradually, and avoid last-minute tanning sessions. Give your skin a few days to settle into a natural, even tone for the best results.

PROP IDEAS

Adding props to your senior photo session is a great way to personalize your images and showcase what makes you unique. ANYTHING can be a prop - there is no right or wrong. Whether it's an item that represents your hobbies, achievements, or future plans, the right props can add depth and personality to your photos. Here are some ideas to consider:

  • Sports Gear: Showcase your athletic side by bringing your uniform, letterman jacket, or equipment like a basketball, football, tennis racket, or even track spikes.
  • Musical Instruments: If you play an instrument, such as a guitar, violin, or trumpet, incorporating it into your session adds a meaningful and creative element.
  • Books & School Memorabilia: Bring your favorite novels, textbooks, or even graduation gear to highlight your academic achievements and love for learning.
  • Art & Creative Supplies: If you're passionate about painting, drawing, or photography, bring your supplies or a finished piece to showcase your artistic side.
  • Pets: If your pet is an important part of your life, they can add a fun and sentimental touch to your session.
  • Hobbies & Special Interests: Whether it's dance shoes, fishing gear, a skateboard, or video game controllers, incorporating items that reflect your passions makes your photos more personal.
  • Vehicles: Whether it's your first car or truck, or even a bicycle, vehicles can add a dynamic and stylish element to your session.
  • College-Related Items or Future Plans: Represent your next step by bringing a college sweatshirt, an acceptance letter, military enlistment gear, or something that symbolizes your career aspirations.
  • Career-Related Props: If you have specific career goals, consider bringing items that represent your future profession, like a chef’s apron, medical scrubs, or an engineering blueprint.
  • Awards & Accomplishments: Bring any medals, trophies, ribbons, or certificates that highlight your achievements in academics, sports, or extracurricular activities. These items tell the story of your dedication and hard work.

Props should complement your session without being overwhelming. Choose a few meaningful items that represent your journey, and I'll make sure they shine in your senior portraits!
